Kaiser Permanente, Capitol Hill Medical Office Building

Kaiser Permanente, Capitol Hill Medical Office Building

As part of a major expansion in the mid-Atlantic area, Kaiser Permanente selected 700 2nd Street in Washington, D.C. for the site of one of their new medical office buildings. The seven-story, 200,000 square foot space is was completed in January, 2011.

The new space features offices, primary and specialty care areas, full-service imaging, a laboratory, pharmacy services, and an outpatient procedures suite. Some of VarcoMac's electrical work included the installation of a roof-top generator, a 160 kV uninterruptable power supply (UPS), a tele/data system, interior lighting, and nurse call, fire alarm, and security systems.

To aid in the pre-design process, VarcoMac utilized BIM software (Building Information Modeling), which not only represented the intended building design in a three dimensional platform, but also provided project team members with detailed information about every material used, from transfer switches to toggle switches. Using BIM software, VarcoMac was also able to quickly identify and work around potential conflicts with the design.

Though not LEED registered, Kaiser Permanente has incorporated many green building practices into the design, material selection, and construction of the new Capitol Hill office building.
